QWERTZ, and why Y and Z are swapped
German keyboards use QWERTZ rather than QWERTY, with the Y and Z positions exchanged. The reason is frequency: Z is common in German and Y is rare, so Z takes the more accessible home-row-adjacent position while Y moves to the awkward bottom-left corner.
For anyone who learned to touch type on QWERTY, this single swap is disproportionately disruptive. Z and Y are not high-frequency letters in English, so the muscle memory for them is weak to begin with, and a weak pattern in the wrong place produces hesitation rather than a clean error you can correct quickly.
The layout also moves several symbols. The slash, the equals sign, the brackets and the at sign all sit differently, and the at sign in particular requires the right Alt key rather than shift. Developers moving between layouts feel this far more than prose writers do.
Umlauts and the ß
German adds four characters: ä, ö, ü and ß. On a QWERTZ keyboard all four have dedicated keys clustered on the right of the home and top rows, which makes them genuinely cheap to type — no dead keys, no modifier combinations, just a key each.
This is the reverse of the Spanish situation, where accents cost extra keystrokes. On a German layout, umlauts are as fast as any other letter, so German typists rarely lose time to them once the positions are learned.
On a US layout the picture changes completely. Umlauts require either the US-International dead key or a modifier combination, and ß has no comfortable equivalent at all. If you write German regularly on a US keyboard, switching the layout is worth considerably more than any amount of practice.

Compound words and reading ahead
German forms compounds by joining words together, which produces the long words the language is known for. Typing them is not harder letter by letter, but it changes the rhythm: instead of frequent short bursts separated by spaces, you type long uninterrupted runs.
That matters because the space bar is a natural resynchronisation point. Every space is a moment where your hands and eyes realign, and a long compound removes several of those moments in a row. Typists who rely on frequent resynchronisation tend to lose their place partway through a long word and have to restart it.
The fix is reading further ahead. In English, staying one word in front of your fingers is usually enough. In German, you need to hold a longer chunk in mind, and typists who make that adjustment find compounds stop being a problem entirely.
Comparing German and English speeds
German words average noticeably longer than English ones, so the same amount of communicated content produces more characters. Since a word is defined as five characters, this can actually flatter German WPM slightly rather than reducing it — you produce more five-character units for the same meaning.
Working against that is the loss of resynchronisation points and, for anyone switching layouts, the Y and Z confusion. In practice most bilingual typists land within a few percent either way, and which language reads higher depends more on which layout they learned first than on the languages themselves.
Taking the test
Select German from the language selector on any test and the word set switches to common German vocabulary, including nouns with their capital letters as German requires. All durations and measurements work identically.
Note that German capitalises every noun, so a German test exercises the shift key far more than an English one. If your accuracy drops here relative to English, the shift key is the first thing to check.
