What makes a typing test suitable for children
A typing test aimed at adults quietly assumes two things a child does not yet have: comfortable reading of arbitrary vocabulary, and the concentration to sustain a task for a minute or more. Give a seven-year-old a standard word list and the test measures their reading rather than their typing, which is neither useful nor encouraging.
This mode uses short, common words a child will recognise immediately, so the reading load stays low and the exercise stays about finding keys. The default duration is thirty seconds rather than sixty, which is long enough to produce a meaningful number and short enough to finish before attention wanders.

A child of seven or eight using correct fingers is usually somewhere around ten to fifteen words per minute. By ten or eleven, twenty to thirty is common with regular practice. Teenagers who type regularly often reach forty or more, which is adult-average territory. A child below these figures is not behind; they have simply had less practice.
Hand size is a real constraint that patience cannot overcome. Small hands cannot comfortably span a full-size keyboard, so a young child may need to shift position for keys an adult reaches without moving. This resolves on its own with growth, and pushing against it produces frustration rather than speed.

Praise accuracy rather than speed. Speed is the visible number and the tempting one to celebrate, but it arrives on its own once the fingers know where the keys are. A child pushed toward speed early learns to guess at key positions, which is a habit that caps them years later.

Raising the chair so the forearms sit roughly level with the keyboard, and adding a box under the feet so the legs are supported, fixes most of it cheaply.
A full-size keyboard is fine for most children over about eight. Below that, a compact keyboard genuinely helps, because it shortens the reaches that small hands cannot make comfortably. What matters most is that the child can rest their fingers on the home row without stretching.
Making practice something a child returns to
The streak counter and personal best on this site exist for exactly this reason. A child who can see that they typed on eleven days in a row, and that their best score has moved from twelve to nineteen, has a concrete reason to come back that does not depend on an adult reminding them.
Beyond that, the most reliable motivator is typing something the child actually wants to write. Practice tests build the mechanics, but a message to a grandparent or a story of their own turns typing into a tool rather than an exercise, and that is the point at which it stops needing to be enforced.
