Type digits rather than words. Almost everyone is dramatically slower on the number row than on letters, and unlike prose, numbers give a reader no way to spot a mistake.
Why numbers are harder than letters
The number row sits at the top of the keyboard, further from the home row than any letter your fingers regularly reach for. Every digit therefore requires your hand to leave its resting position and return, and because you type far fewer digits than letters in ordinary life, that movement never becomes as automatic as typing a common word.
The deeper problem is that numbers carry no redundancy. If you mistype a word, the shape of the remaining letters usually makes the intended word obvious and a reader glides past it. If you type 3847 instead of 3487, nothing about the result looks wrong. There is no context to correct it and no spellchecker that can help.
This changes what the test is measuring. On a words test, speed is the headline and accuracy is the discipline behind it. On a number test, accuracy is the whole point. A high numeric speed with occasional errors is worse than useless in any context where the digits actually mean something.
The number row against the numeric keypad
Anyone entering numbers in volume eventually moves to the numeric keypad, and the reason is layout rather than habit. The keypad clusters ten digits in a three-by-three block plus zero, all reachable from one hand resting on the 5 key, which has a raised bump for exactly this purpose. The whole hand stays put and only the fingers move.
The number row asks for something quite different: digits spread across the full width of the board, worked by both hands, each one a reach away from home position. For occasional numbers inside sentences that is entirely reasonable. For entering a column of figures it is slow, and experienced data entry operators reach speeds on a keypad that are simply not available on the top row.
This test exercises the number row, because that is where digits appear when they are mixed into ordinary text: dates in an email, quantities in a document, version numbers in a commit message. If your work is pure numeric entry, a dedicated keypad is a better investment than more practice.
Where numeric errors actually come from
Numeric mistakes cluster in predictable places. Transposition, typing 47 as 74, is the most common and the hardest to catch, because both digits are correct and only their order is wrong. Adjacent-key errors between neighbouring digits are next, especially in the middle of the row where 4, 5 and 6 sit close together.
Long unbroken strings are the highest risk of all. Eight digits with no grouping give your eye nothing to anchor on, and it is easy to lose your place or repeat a digit. This is exactly why phone numbers, card numbers and account numbers are conventionally written in groups.

Practising numbers deliberately
The useful practice is slower than feels productive. Type digits at a pace where you are certain of each one, without looking down, until your fingers know where the row is. Speed follows from that certainty; it never precedes it, and chasing it directly just embeds errors.
It also helps to practise numbers in the shape you actually encounter them. Dates, prices, phone numbers and reference codes all have their own rhythm, and typing realistic strings prepares you better than typing random digits. Reading a number aloud in groups as you type it is an old data-entry habit that genuinely reduces transposition.

What a good numeric score looks like
Expect your number-row speed to sit well below your letter speed, frequently at half or less. That is normal and not a sign of a problem. A typist producing seventy words per minute on prose might manage thirty on digits, because the movements are less practised and the material offers no rhythm to fall into.
Judge yourself on accuracy first. Ninety-nine percent is the standard worth holding for numeric work, considerably stricter than the high nineties that serve well enough for prose, because there is no way for a reader to recover a wrong digit. Once accuracy is reliably that high, speed can be pushed.
