How Hangul typing works
Korean is alphabetic, which puts it much closer to English than to Japanese or Chinese. Each key produces a jamo — a consonant or vowel — and the input method assembles those jamo into syllable blocks automatically as you type. The word 한국 takes six keystrokes and produces two visible characters, with no candidate list and no conversion decision.
That automatic assembly is why Korean typing feels fluid in a way that IME-based languages do not. There is no pause to choose between candidates, no conversion to accept, and no ambiguity about what your keystrokes will produce. What you type is what appears.
The standard layout is Dubeolsik, which places consonants on the left hand and vowels on the right. That split is not decorative: because Korean syllables alternate consonant and vowel, the layout produces a natural left-right-left rhythm that experienced typists rely on heavily.
Why Korean speeds look different from English
Korean typing speed is traditionally measured in 타자 (taja), keystrokes per minute, rather than words per minute. Because a Korean syllable block typically takes two or three keystrokes, taja figures are numerically much larger than WPM figures — several hundred is ordinary, and skilled typists reach well over a thousand.
This site reports words per minute using the same five-character convention as every other language, so your Korean figure will not match a taja score from a Korean typing program. Neither is wrong; they count different things.
The deeper point is that cross-language comparison is not meaningful. Korean packs a full syllable into one character, so the same amount of communicated content produces a lower character count than English. Compare Korean scores against Korean scores.

Dubeolsik and Sebeolsik
Almost everyone uses Dubeolsik, the two-set layout. A minority use Sebeolsik, a three-set layout that assigns separate keys to initial consonants, vowels and final consonants. Sebeolsik requires fewer keystrokes and distributes work more evenly between the hands, and dedicated users reach very high speeds with it.
The trade-off is the familiar one: Sebeolsik is genuinely more efficient and almost no keyboard is labelled for it, so you are committing to a layout you cannot use comfortably on someone else’s machine. For most people the alternating rhythm of Dubeolsik, practised well, is the better investment.
Improving your Korean typing speed
Because Hangul assembly is automatic, Korean speed responds to the same practice that works for English: build accuracy first, then let speed rise. There is no conversion skill layered on top, which makes progress more directly a function of finger technique than it is in Japanese.
The specific thing worth drilling is final consonants. Syllables ending in a batchim, especially a double one, are where most Korean typists lose time, because the hand has to return to the left side for a third consonant before starting the next syllable. Practising words with heavy final consonants directly targets that.
